An animal shelter hopes to find a new home for three cats who were rescued by a volunteer who was tragically mown down by a dangerous driver a few months later.

The cats were rescued from an embankment in St Mary’s Road, Garston , by 70-year-old Sheila Harding, who was a long-standing volunteer with Garston Animal Rescue .

But, sadly, a few months after making the discovery, Sheila was killed after being knocked down on the same road.

John Lacey, of Millwood Road, Speke , was jailed for four years last month after admitting causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving .

John Lacey, 60, of Millwood Road, Speke, jailed for four years after admitting causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving when he ran red lights, killed Sheila Harding, 70, and seriously injured her husband Edward Harding, 78.

Sheila originally rescued the cats from an embankment, which was wedged between a car park and a busy road, on a cold evening in November 2014.

It was Sheila’s wish that the three adult cats - named Maggie, Jake and Kristie - be found a home together. But 18 months later, the charity is still trying to make her wish come true.

Garston Animal Rescue volunteer Joanne Hughes said: “The cats were hungry, frightened and in danger of being killed by the cars when Sheila rescued them.

“It was her wish that these three beautiful cats can be found a home together, as they are inseparable and love to snuggle up together and groom each other.

“What they need is a loving, quiet and patient home where they can learn to trust people and build their confidence.

“After their traumatic and dismal ordeal they really do deserve a chance to shine in a home they can finally call their own.”

Joanne added: “Sheila’s long standing dedication to Garston Animal Rescue means that we know just how important it is to fulfil one of her wishes for the rescue by finding a home for the family of cats she rescued shortly before her death.

“It would be wonderful if we could fulfil one of the wishes of a most treasured and terribly missed supporter and friend.”

Sheila Harding was knocked down by Lacey seconds after stepping on to a pedestrian crossing on St Mary’s Road in January last year.

She was walking home with her husband, Edward, from the animal shelter where she had volunteered for more than 20 years.

She suffered fatal injuries after Lacey’s Ford Focus ran a red light and hit the couple.

Mr Harding, 78, was seriously injured and now has mobility problems.
