Thumb injury behind Jets missing tight end

The Jets have been missing one of their starters during recent OTA practices.

Tight end Kellen Davis, who started nine games last season, is out with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb, The Post has learned. Davis had surgery on the thumb. The Jets expect he will be fully recovered before training camp begins in late July.

Davis suffered the injury in a recent OTA practice and has been sidelined since. The timing of the injury makes it a minor issue because the season is still three months away. The recovery period is about six weeks. It is the same injury Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered on his non-throwing hand last year and played through.

The 30-year-old Davis played in all 16 games in 2015, his first year with the Jets. He surpassed Jeff Cumberland as the primary tight end during the season. Davis usually was asked to be a blocker in the Jets offense more than a receiver. He only had three catches for 18 yards and one touchdown.

The Jets re-signed Davis this offseason to a one-year, $965,000 contract.
