AUSTIN – The Quanah girls golf team will enter Tuesday’s final round of the 2A State Golf Championships with legitimate hopes of a medal after an opening 371 Monday at Roy Kizer Golf Course.

The Lady Indians are sitting fifth at the halfway point, eight shots away from third place. Grapeland has a 16-shot lead over the field with a 345, but Vega (361), Christoval (363), Normangee (366) and the Lady Indians are all in the mix for medaling.

“Even though we didn’t perform to what we expected today, we still have a shot to finish strong and get a medal,” Quanah coach Trenton Boyd said.

The Quanah girls golf team is sitting in fifth place at state.

Makayla Simmons led the Lady Indians with an 83, which is tied for ninth with Normangee’s Braydee Frederick. Christoval’s Taylor Tomlinson has a two-shot lead over Forsan’s Jillian Jones after recoding a 74.

Ashlyn Simmons (94), Heather O’Neal (96), Vanessa Quinones (98) and Erynn Leija (110) were the Lady Indians’ other state competitors.

Olney’s Mattie Barrington, the Region II-2A champion, carded an 85 and is tied for 12th place. The Lady Cubs are sitting in 10th place with a 421 and couldn’t throw out their worst score like most teams could because Heidi Rodriguez – their second-best golfer at regionals – had to withdraw.

Holliday’s Lawson tied for ninth

AUSTIN – Holliday senior Bailee Lawson posted an 89 during the first round of the 3A State Championships at Grey Rock Golf Course.

Lawson is tied with Alpine’s Morgan Molsbee for ninth place, 14 shots behind leader Lyndy Laurell of Rockdale (75). McGregor’s Paige Gilstrap (78) and Chapel Hill’s Mason Garrett (79) were the only other golfers to break 80 during the opening 18 holes.

Lawson had eight pars and seven bogeys on the challenging course, but a quadruple bogey on each nine kept her from finishing higher up the leaderboard.

“I’m proud of how Bailee played today. There’s really not one hole where you can relax,” Holliday coach Clay Strealy said. “You are constantly tested here, and she battled and fought throughout.”

Class A: At the Class A State Championships, Throckmorton’s Jordan Whitfield shot a 111 and teammate Abbie Miller was right behind her with a 112. Whitfield is 37th and Miller is tied for 38th heading into the final round at Lions Municipal Golf Course.
