Tom Kerridge showed off his incredible 12-stone weight loss on Good Morning Britain today (January 17).

During an interview with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, the Michelin-starred chef explained he decided to take action after realising he was obese, weighing in at just shy of 30 stone, as he approached his 40th birthday.

"It was a point of recognition on my life where I thought I need to make a change, I need to do something," he said.

"There weren't any conversations with doctors or anything to do with my career – professionally-wise I was doing really well, the pub was doing great. It was just an age thing."

Tom revealed the secret to his weight loss was cutting out carbohydrates and alcohol.

He explained that he chose this method because it meant that he wouldn't have to make any drastic changes to how he cooks.

"I didn't need to alter it at all," he continued. "I still cook in butter. I just cut out starch, carbohydrates and alcohol. That's it. No pasta, bread or rice – and no drinking.

"Drinking on diets isn't good – and that's on any diet. It's not a calorie thing or the sugar content, it's the mindset."

Tom claimed that the risk of drinking alcohol when trying to diet can increase the temptation to snack and cheat.

Although the key to his weight loss was cutting out carbs, he stressed that all diets do actually work.

Explaining why some people think they don't, he added: "The reason people fall off is because the food you're eating you're not interested in. You get fed up and you get bored of it.

"The idea of [my diet] was to look at lower calorie food, which is the most common way of losing weight and the NHS recommends it, and making it flavoursome."

If you're interested in Tom's low calorie recipes, his new book Lose Weight for Good is out now. The title has also been adapted into a new series for BBC Two called Tom Kerridge's Lose Weight For Good, which is airing now.

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays from 6am on ITV.
