Million-Dollar Winner In MA As Powerball Jackpot Hits $430M

Massachusetts had a big winning ticket as the Powerball jackpot nears half a billion.

A lucky Bay Stater won $1 million in Wednesday night's Powerball drawing. Lottery officials said three million-dollar tickets were sold – in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Kentucky.

The winner bought the ticket at Stop & Shop, 2991 Cranberry Hwy. in East Wareham, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery. Three winning $50,000 tickets were also sold in Massachusetts:

  • Bob’s Beer & Wine, 220 Pulaski Blvd. in Bellingham
  • Market Basket, 1900 Main St in Tewksbury
  • Convenience Plus, 241 Main St in Lee

If it seems like Massachusetts residents win often, it's not because we're especially lucky. According to 2016 data cited by finance blog lendedu.com, the average Bay Stater spends $762.98 on the lottery annually, the most out of any state. The nationwide average is $223.04.

Wednesday's million-dollar winners matched all five numbers – 3, 57, 64, 68 and 69 – but failed to match the Powerball number, which was 15. The jackpot will now climb to a whopping $430 million with the next drawing scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20.

That's only topped by the Mega Millions jackpot, which has risen to $970 million ahead of its drawing on Friday, Oct. 19 at 11 p.m. The previous record, set in March of 2012, was $656 million.
