Latest reports indicate Sean Payton is likely to stay in New Orleans

In the weeks since the Los Angeles Rams fired Jeff Fisher, they have embarked on a search to find a new head coach who will be the perfect fit for a young team with raw potential.

While all of their serious candidates so far have been NFL assistants and coordinators, there were multiple reports about a mutual attraction between the Rams and New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.

For weeks, the unlikely but possible opportunity to trade for Payton seemed like it may be on the table, but now it looks like the longtime Saints coach will be staying put.

According to Alex Marvez of Sporting News, the New Orleans Saints have just fired a whole slew of assistants. The five coaches let go include assistant head coach Joe Vitt, special teams coordinator Greg McMahon and defensive line coach Bill Johnson.

In his confirmation of the report, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport added that it’s likely Payton will stay on for a 12th season as the Saints head coach.

It’s also worth noting that the both of Payton’s coordinators — Pete Carmichael on offense and Dennis Allen on defense — currently remain with the Saints as well.
