A TV presenter offered advice on how to protect insects.

Insect Armageddon was launched by ASCENT (Ascot Community Network) with support from Wildlife in Ascot on Wednesday, March 7.

About 50 people gathered at Ascot Heath Junior School and listed to TV presenter Professor George McGavin.

He was invited to speak by Anne Yarwood, who has lived in Ascot for 60 years.

She said:  ”I heard the result of a German survey of insects in a pristine habitat.

During one year 80 per cent had disappeared. Gone. It hit me in the heart and I thought I must act.”

Prof McGavin spoke about the detrimental effect that using pesticides and habitat loss have on insects.

He gave advice on how to  encourage insects which includes gardening without insecticides and allowing dead wood to rot on the ground.

Anne Ayres, of Wildlife In Ascot, who helped launch the new initiative, added: “There is global concern about the state of our insect populations, which are fundamental to all life on earth, and this is a local response to the issue.”

The initiative plans to appoint teams to meet local landowners who are interested in encouraging insects on their land and aims to raise awareness about the importance of insects through education, particularly among young children.
