Activision CEO paid for Michigan's Rome trip in 2017
The mega-donor behind Michigan’s European excursion in 2017 is a video game CEO.
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday in Paris that Bobby Kotick was the man who ponied up around $750,000 for the team to go to Rome in 2017. The school had previously said the trip was financed by a donor and not paid for with school funds but declined to name the person behind the trip.
Kotick is the CEO of Activision Blizzard, the company that makes the “Call of Duty” video games.
“Two great Michigan guys, especially Bobby. They’re the best,” Harbaugh said. “Bobby doesn’t want anything said. He doesn’t want anybody to know that, but it’s a hard secret to keep.”
The other great Michigan guy is Don Graham, who is splitting the France trip with Kotick. The cost of that trip is expected to be about the same as the Rome trip was.
Michigan’s travel plans are expected to continue in 2019, though no destination has been chosen. The 2018 trip is much less controversial than the 2017 trip, which came after some outside complaints and even an NCAA rule to make sure that off-campus practices weren’t being held during off times.
