'It took two years for me to know we'd be together forever': John Legend says it wasn't love at first sight with model wife Chrissy Teigen

They're one of the sweetest couples in the showbiz world, but it took John Legend two years before he realised Chrissy Teigen was 'the one'.

Speaking to the new issue of Los Angeles Confidential magazine, the singer said he was 'too cautious' to let himself fall in love with the Sports Illustrated model after meeting her on the set of his music video for Stereo in 2007.

'I wasn't like, "This is the woman I'm going to marry" from day one,' John, 35, said.

'For me I'm the kind of person who needs to grow into that feeling. It was probably a couple of years in when I could already see us being together forever.'

He said that over time, he felt Chrissy, 28, became more of a muse to his music and that's when he realised these feelings of love were real.

'The more you know someone, the more you're inspired by your relationship,' the Ordniary People crooner said.

'Also, I grew up just learning what it means to be in love with somebody... because I had never really been in love before. I guess you have to grow enough to be able to write that song with sincerity and authenticity.'

After four years of dating, Legend became engaged to the model in December 2011.

Two years later they married on September 14, in Como, Italy, with the couple appearing on the cover of Martha Stewart Weddings magazine and Chrissy in a Vera Wang gown.
