Learn Lancaster County history and lore around a campfire on Friday, Oct. 26, in Lancaster County Central Park.

SATURDAY

Apples from Cider to Butter and Snitz program in Lancaster County Central Park: drop in anytime between 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Mill Creek Campground Sites 2 & 3. For all ages. Assist Johnny Appleseed (aka naturalist Brandon Pentz) to make fresh apple cider with an official apple press. Drink the fruits of your labor while you learn about Johnny’s life. Then walk over to a campfire with naturalist Lisa J. Sanchez and learn about other ways to use the apple. See and taste freshly made apple butter and apple snitz. Hike for public, led by Lancaster Hiking Club: at 8 a.m., hike 12 strenuous miles on the Appalachian Trail from Route 501 to Route  72. Meet at the corner of Race and Buchanan Avenues, Lancaster, to carpool.

TUESDAY

Munchkin Science, Leaf Animals program: 1-2 p.m. in the Environmental Center of Lancaster County Central Park. For ages 3-5 with adults. Join naturalist Ann Strauss for another week of Munchkin Science. Young scientists will be taking a hike and collecting leaves along the trail. Afterward, return to the EC classroom to create a leaf animal using the leaves just collected. Cost is $3 per child age 3 and up; $1 per adult. Homeschool Water Testing Workshop: led by Susquehanna Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. Workshop is at 1:30 p.m. For ages 8 and up. Free and open to the public. Join Allison Scholz and Chesapeake Conservation Corp intern Amy Kochel for a hands-on water quality testing workshop. Investigate the Susquehanna River and storm water runoff to see how healthy the water currently is. Students will use tests to determine the chemical properties, and investigate the physical health if water conditions permit.

Join naturalist Kristyn Small for this engaging evening around the campfire.  You’ll hear local legends, lore and spooky tales for Halloween.  Feel free to bring your own s’more supplies and a lawn chair or blanket. Lancaster County Bird Club field trip: Rosemary Spreha leads a trip to Hidden Valley in Schuylkill County, to observe saw-whet owl banding. Participants will meet at the banding station at 6:30 p.m. Trip is limited to 12 participants, and trip will run late into the night. Pennsylvania fall turkey season begins: Saturday, Oct. 27, in all WMUs except 5B, 5C and 5D. Fall turkey season is Oct. 30-Nov. 1 in WMU 5B, which covers most of Lancaster County.

Nature Exploration and Pumpkin Creation program: Saturday, Oct. 27, from 2-3 p.m., in the Environmental Center of Lancaster County Central Park. For all ages. Come and create your own no-carve pumpkin using materials found in nature with the help of naturalist Vanessa Hurst. Go on a scavenger hunt on trails around the Environmental Center and collect items such as pine cones, leaves, acorns, and twigs. Back in the classroom, see how creative you can be by designing a face on your own pumpkin. Cost is $2 per person; $2 per pumpkin. Sierra Club-Lancaster Group is seeking volunteers to help with meadow reclamation:  at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in southern Lancaster County’s Pequea Township Silver Mine Park. People who want to join in this activity are asked to bring gloves, long pants, work boots, brush trimmers, lightweight saws and water. Dress to get dirty and for the weather and wear long sleeve shirts. Participants should meet Sierra Club outings leader Jim Meenan in the parking lot near the top of the hill. Lancaster County Bird Club seeking applicants for Harold B. Morrin Scholarship: To promote birding and nature study in general, the annual scholarship for one youth (age 12 through 18) and one adult has a deadline of Dec. 1, 2018, with a decision made by Dec. 15, 2018. Specific information about the scholarship as well as the application can be found at the Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) website at www.lancasterbirdclub.org under the About Us tab. Suggested activities and projects are included on the website. Examples include participation in a nature camp sponsored by such groups as the Audubon Society, the American Birding Association and local organizations, as well as projects for Scouts, college students, interns, and teachers. The scholarship is a $400 maximum per person. Harold B. Morrin, now deceased, was very active in the LCBC and known locally and abroad as an avid birder and habitat conservationist. He was a mentor to many young birders and was generous with his time and knowledge in helping birders of all ages and abilities.
