And just like that... another weekend of rugby league has been and gone.

As usual, there were no shortage of talking points in Super League, in the lower leagues and Down Under following another few days of brutal action.

Warrington lost (again), Castleford got back to winning ways and the Brits plying their trade in the NRL had mixed fortunes.

Wire are now 10 points behind the leaders and six points off the pace in their bid to avoid the dreaded middle eight.

So - what did we learn? Look no further...

1. Walmsley impresses for Saints

When prop Alex Walmsley is on song the biggest bopper in the game is unstoppable.

Walmsley has put in back-to-back destructive performances for St Helens, first against Catalans and this week against Warrington and leads the way with the most metres made and most offloads in Super League.

Matty Smith looked a bit perplexed to get the man of the match award against the Wolves with Walmsley and centre Mark Percival streets ahead.

Walmsley didn’t kick on last season but has shown already this year why he’s currently the best front rower in the competition.

2. Johnstone shows international credentials

Johnstone's try was easy on the eye (

Who’s your favourite Tom? Knicker-magnet Jones, expanding chipmunk Labour MP Watson or grinning Scientologist Cruise?

How about Wakefield winger Tom Johnstone, a chiselled flier who’d look more at ease modelling miners’ pit-lamps than men’s grooming products.

Johnstone scored two against Leeds and backed that up with a contemptuous swat and swerve to cross against Leigh on Thursday night.

He’s big, quick and it might be worth chucking last season’s young player of the year into the England team for the World Cup warm-up against Samoa in May.

3. When Sky don't seem so bad...

The Aussies sure know how to plug a sponsor... (

It’s easy to criticise Sky Sports commentary and coverage of the game - though less so now Stevo has waddled off.

But thank yourself lucky we don’t have to suffer cringeworthy plugs like they do Down Under.

Channel Nine’s coverage is now backed by a burger giant (‘official quick service restaurant partner’) and during the Roosters v Rabbitohs clash which opened NRL round four, the otherwise immaculate Phil Gould dropped this in.

“We’re sponsored by McDonald’s this season. I will visit a McDonald’s on the way home every Thursday night.”

Pass the (brown McDonald’s) sick bag.

4. Room for Eastmond at Wigan?

Kyle Eastmond was linked with a move from rugby union back to league with Wigan this week.

But where would the Wasps and England centre play?

Warriors are blessed with two full-backs in Morgan Escare and Sam Tomkins, an international half-back pairing of Thomas Leuluai and George Williams and enough centres and wingers to win a Grand Slam for the England team in the other code.

Eastmond famously sulked and simmered before leaving St Helens for union so seems like a risky bit of business to plonk him on the bench.

5. From Yorkshire to Australia...

Wardle may be lost in translation Down Under (

Former Huddersfield star Joe Wardle made his debut as a sub as his Newcastle Knights side were stuffed 40-0 by Penrith Panthers.

The Halifax-born centre was interviewed after the game, red-faced and shirtless with Aussie viewers possibly needing a translator to interpret his broad Yorkshire accent.

“We dipped us toe as we say in rugby. We dipped us toe and they got on the front foot,” the 25-year-old said. I’ve no idea what that means - answers on a postcard please.

6. Wire worth a few quid?

There was more disappointment for Warrington on Friday (

Seems like a good time to get on Warrington to win the Grand Final.

Many people’s pre-season title favourites are now a remarkable 33/1 to lift the trophy at Old Trafford in October after losing their first six games on the bounce.

They’re a side shot to pieces in confidence best summed up by Stefan Ratchford juggling and dropping a the ball after 71 minutes of their latest defeat at St Helens.

“That play sums up Warrington when you see a player of that ability make a mistake like that,” said Terry O’Connor on Sky Sports, a spot on assessment of the hole the Wolves are in.

7. Widdop the coolest cucumber Down Under

England stand-off Gareth Widdop is a calm and cool character on and off the pitch.

The St George Illawarra star, tipped for a return to Super League next season, kicked five goals from five attempts as his side saw off New Zealand Warriors 26-12.

That was even more remarkable given the 28-year-old had been involved in a horrific car accident on the way to the game, with his motor a total write-off.

“I will be riding my pushbike to training for the next few weeks I think,” he said. “That’s what happens, that is life.”
