DECATUR — Decatur police have arrested a 28-year-old man wanted for stealing a vehicle and attempting to run over two men, according to a sworn affidavit.
A woman told police she saw the man get inside an SUV without permission Jan. 2, the affidavit said. She said she later witnessed him driving through a front yard while aiming the vehicle at two men.
The affidavit said the vehicle's owner did not give permission to the man to take the SUV, which was valued at $11,171. He also said he saw the man attempting to run over the two men.
Both men standing in the yard told police they saw the man accelerate toward them, the affidavit said. One of the men told police if he had not jumped to dodge the vehicle, the suspect would have struck him.
Decatur police observed fresh tire marks in the front yard that matched the direction victims and witnesses stated they saw the man drive the SUV, the affidavit said.
On Saturday, officers responded to a "fight call" Saturday in which the man being sought in the earlier incident was involved, according to the affidavit. When the suspect saw officers, he ran but but was arrested just after 7 p.m., the affidavit said.
The suspect is facing preliminary charges of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and theft over $10,000, which are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office. The suspect is being held in the Macon County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bond.
