The family of Carla Stefaniak, the Florida woman who disappeared and was then found murdered while on vacation in Costa Rica, brought her remains to Tampa late Friday night.

Stefaniak’s brothers and her best friend brought Carla’s cremated remains home from Costa Rica.

When Stefaniak’s family realized she was missing, a few of them flew to Costa Rica to try and find her.

“There were some challenges,” said Gregory Zwolinski, Stefaniak’s best friend. “A missing person case is treated differently than a kidnapping or a homicide. We spent a few days proving to the departments that they should escalate this case. Once we were able to accomplish that, things moved very quickly.”

Authorities found a body Monday at a property where Stefaniak had been staying on vacation. The next day, authorities said they believed the body was Stefaniak.

Late Tuesday night, the family posted on Facebook that Costa Rican authorities finally allowed them to see the body. The woman’s father confirmed it was her.

A 32-year-old security guard at the property where Stefaniak was staying is now under arrest in connection to her death.

Investigators say the security guard lived in the room next to where Stefaniak was staying.

When asked about justice for Stefaniak, her family says they believe the FBI is doing everything it can to hold the people responsible for her murder accountable.

The family is still working on plans for Stefaniak’s memorial.
