Day in History: Chicago Great Western railway to build depot

The Chicago Great Western railway company is planning to erect a new modern depot in Rochester. The structure could cost up to $50,000 and will be between Fourth and Zumbro Streets.

1991 – 25 years ago

• Tom Week allowed only one hit and struck out 10 batters in going seven innings as Rochester Lourdes won a 4-2 decision over Austin Pacelli in Hiawatha Valley League baseball play.

• Lowell Helgerson, Rochester Airport manager for the past 24 years is retiring and Steve Leqve, assistant airport manager, has been named to the position.

1966 – 50 years ago

• The Rochester Chamber of Commerce will add a new committee to its rolls next week. The new group will be a sports and attractions committee.

• The new Elgin combined town and fire hall will begin construction in May. The building will have meeting rooms, a fire equipment garage, kitchen facilities and bathrooms. It will be built on Main Street.

1941 – 75 years ago

• A pie baking contest was a feature of the High Forest farm bureau unit meeting in Stewartville. First place went to Mrs. Ennis Ackerman. Nineteen pies were made and entered in the contest using lard as shortening.

• Howard Costello, centerfielder, was chosen captain of the Rochester High School baseball team for the 1941 season. Costello was selected because of his leadership skills and athletic ability.

1916 – 100 years ago

• The Chicago Great Western railway company is planning to erect a new modern depot in Rochester. The structure could cost up to $50,000 and will be between Fourth and Zumbro Streets in the same block as the present station is located.

• "The Broadway Café," recently opened at 112 S. Broadway. It is one of the neatest, most attractive and up-to-date cafés in the city. The establishment also includes a private dining room.

A federal appeals court in San Francisco overturned home run leader Barry Bonds' obstruction of justice conviction, ruling 10-1 that his meandering answer before a grand jury in 2003 was not material to the government's investigation into illegal steroids distribution.
