Maryland state police were called Sunday evening after a man parked his vehicle in the middle of the road, walked to the edge of Chesapeake City Bridge in Elkton, Maryland and stopped.

The man refused to speak with anyone when troopers arrived just after 5 p.m., stating if he saw another officer approach him, he would jump.

Chesapeake City Bridge was closed either way, and the United States Coast Guard and Cecil County's fire department and sheriff's office created a perimeter around the man.

Troopers attempted to talk the man away from the edge while other units held the perimeter, waiting for negotiators to arrive.

The man tried to move over the bridge's ledge, prompting two troopers to talk him back from the verge.

After being taken into custody, the man was then transported to Union Hospital for an emergency petition.

An hour after troopers arrived and brought the man away from the ledge — about 6 p.m. — Chesapeake City Bridge was re-opened.
