An 11-year-old girl has been charged with first-degree child abuse in the death of a 1-year-old boy, the son of a family friend, in Prince George's County.

Police say the girl was babysitting Sunday at a Suitland home when she became angry over an incident unrelated to the baby, identified as Paxton Davis, and brutally assaulted him.

The boy was left in the care of the girl's adult family members at their home on Pearl Drive Saturday night, according to investigators. The boy's fatal injuries occurred when the girl’s mother left her and the baby alone in order to run an errand on Sunday morning.

According to Major Brian Reilly, Commander of the PGPD Criminal Investigation Division, a child has to be at least 13 to take care of another child in the state of Maryland.

Police responded to the hospital and began the investigation Sunday. They say the boy, who lived on 19th Street SE in D.C., had severe injuries to his upper body. He died on Thursday.

The girl has been committed to a juvenile facility.
