Greylock's David Sze: What Makes The Best Entrepreneurs

This article is more than 10 years old.

Greylock Partners' David Sze has invested in some of the top consumer Internet companies in recent years, including Facebook , LinkedIn and Pandora, placing Sze in the Midas List's top ten again this year. Moreover, Greylock as a firm has invested in three of the largest VC-backed IPOs in recent years: Facebook, LinkedIn and Workday .

In the video above, Sze talks about what particular qualities Greylock looks for in entrepreneurs. Founders like Mark Zuckerberg are not only "driven by excellence," but also constantly learning, Sze says.

Sze, who is the managing partner at Greylock, also talks about what services Greylock provides its portfolio companies. These services may be less well-known--or less promoted than other firms--but are an important part of what Greylock provides to entrepreneurs.

Staying on top in venture requires  consistently doing well in four different areas, Sze says. "There’s a final exam in venture every four to six years. The scary thing is you need to get an 'A' in every discipline. You need to be on generational planning, need to be on great deal flow, need be on great outcomes, you need to be on great company building. If you don’t do all those (things), you don’t survive."
