Where to go in Hudson County for 2018 Memorial Day events

With Memorial Day on the horizon, Hudson County is preparing to honor the soldiers who lost their lives in service of our nation. Here are some of the events taking place.

Bayonne

The city will hold its Memorial Day Parade on Monday at 10:30 a.m. The Parade starts at Fifth Street and Broadway and ends at 32nd Street and Broadway. A wreath-laying ceremony at the World War I Monument at Fifth and Dodge streets will be held at 10 a.m.

Our Lady of Assumption Catholic War Veterans post 1612 will hold its annual Memorial Day Mass on Monday, May 28 at 8 a.m. at the Parish of St. John Paul II at 39 East 22nd Street. The service will be officiated by Rev. Zenon Boczek. Following the Mass, all are welcome to meet at Catholic War Veterans post 1612 at 18 West 23rd Street for coffee and light refreshments.

Hoboken

The city's 120th Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. It will start at Hoboken City Hall, at First and Washington streets. Michael DePalma, a decorated U.S. Army captain who served with the 3rd Infantry Division & the 101st Airborne Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom, is the grand marshal. Currently he is a Hoboken police detective.

Kearny

Kearny will kick off its Memorial Day commemorations on Thursday with its annual parade, starting at 7 p.m. on Belgrove Drive.

Jersey City

-- Holy Name Cemetery will host a Memorial Day Mass on Monday, May 28, at 11 a.m. The Mass will be held rain or shine. There will be canopies and seating provided.

-- The Korean War Veterans of Hudson County will be honoring all veterans on Friday at the Korean War Monument at Washington and Dudley Street in Jersey City at 10 a.m.

-- The nonprofit group Philippine Plaza will host a Memorial Day event on Sunday at Philippine Plaza, at the corner of Manila Avenue and Second Street, in Downtown Jersey City, dedicated to Philippine-American veterans of all wars.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include a small dog show.

-- The Lafayette Amvets Post 33 will meet on Memorial Day, May 28, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church on the corners of Pacific and Bramhall Aves. There will be a march throughout the Lafayette area and return to the church at 10 a.m. for a concelebrated Mass with Father Lozinsky and Szabo. Following mass will be a Memorial Day service at Dr. Ercel Webb Park/Lafayette Park, followed by a luncheon for all members, family, and friends, at the Broadway Diner, at 1075 Broadway, in Bayonne.

-- The all-volunteer operated Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery will host their 9th annual 'Honoring Our Heroes' musical military Tribute on Memorial Day, May 28, at 1 p.m. The event is free and all are invited to enjoy & participate in this tribute to honor Veterans. An appearance by The American Bombshells & Friends is scheduled. Harsimus Cemetery is located at 435 Newark Ave.

Weehawken

The township will hold its Memorial Day Parade on Monday. The parade kicks off at 9:30 a.m. from Highpoint and Hudson avenues and will arrive at the Soldier & Sailor Monument on Boulevard East at 11 a.m. In case of rain, the program and ceremony will be held at Weehawken High School gym at Liberty Place at 11 a.m.

Secaucus

While the Secaucus Memorial Day Parade scheduled for May 19 was canceled because of the rain, the town will take time out during the street fair June 1 to pay tribute to veterans.

East Newark

The borough will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Borough Hall, 34 Sherman Ave. A Memorial Day Mass will follow at 6:30 p.m. at St. Anthony's R.C. Church.

West New York

The town's Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 24 at Veterans Park, 54th and Boulevard East. Kids crafts and activities will be available such as face painting, raffles, and the Memorial High School Band will perform.

North Bergen

The township will mark the Memorial Day holiday with its annual tribute at 7 p.m. on May 24 at the North Bergen Recreation Center, 6300 Meadowview Blvd. Veterans from various overseas conflicts will be in attendance.

Mayor Nicholas Sacco will lead the tributes along with Freeholder Anthony Vainieri, the township commissioners, and other local officials and residents. The North Bergen High School Band will perform a medley of patriotic songs and Taps on the bugle.

Harrison

The Harrison American Legion Post 282 and the VFW Post 340 will host a Memorial Day Service on Thursday, May 24, 6 p.m., in Roosevelt Park - Veteran's Plaza. Immediately following the service, refreshments will be served at the Harrison/East Newark Elks Lodge, across the Street on Harrison Ave.

Guttenberg

The towns Memorial Day ceremony will take place on Memorial Day, May 28, at 1 p.m. at Monument Park (70 St and Blvd East). An outdoor BBQ will follow the ceremony.

North Arlington

Holy Cross Cemetery will host a Memorial Day Mass on Monday, May 28, at 11 a.m. The Mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Joseph Tobin and will be held rain or shine. There will be canopies and seating provided.
