Man Hits Police Car In Pursuit To Shinnecock Reservation: Cops

He intentionally hit a New York State Police vehicle and was taken into custody after a "violent struggle," authorities say.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A Westbury man was arrested after he led New York State Troopers on a pursuit to the Shinnecock Reservation and intentionally hit a police car, authorities said.

New York State Police Troop L arrested of Muhammad Haynes after the incident, which took place on Friday at 6:15 a.m.

According to police, troopers from the New York State Police Riverside Barracks were patroling Sunrise Highway in Southampton when they saw a white Dodge Journey driving erratically and heading east.

The troopers went to stop the vehicle and as they approached, the driver fled, police said.

Troopers pursued the vehicle east on Sunrise Highway; the driver headed to Montauk Highway and entered the Shinnecock Indian Reservation, police said.

Haynes, at one point, intentionally struck a New York State Police vehicle, police said. Shortly thereafter, he struck a parked car on Little Beach Road and after "a violent struggle," troopers took him into custody, police said.

One of the troopers and Haynes sustained minor injuries; both were taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, police said.

Haynes was slated to be arraigned in the town of Southampton Court on charges including tampering with physical evidence, a felony; third degree criminal mischief, a felony; resisting arrest, a misdemeanor; obstruction of governmental administration, a misdemeanor; second degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor; third degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor; driving while intoxicated, a felony; reckless driving, a misdemeanor; circumventing an interlock device; speed not reasonable and prudent; failure to maintain lane; and possession of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, police said.
