American sprinter Tyson Gay has reported that he failed a drug test and as a result will miss the World Championships next month in Moscow.

The 30 year old track star has not revealed the banned substance that was in his system at the time of the test on May 16, only that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency notified him of the positive result.

His ‘B’ sample will be tested shortly in hopes of a different result.

Missing the World Championships is a choice, he has not been banned from competition but has withdrawn in the aftermath of his failed drug test.

Not someone to make excuses for his failed drug test, Tyson Gay was brief with his comments as he tried to hold back tears during a phone interview from Amsterdam. “I don’t have a sabotage story. I basically put my trust in someone and was let down.”

Missing events is devastating to the 30 year old. Finally healthy after missing quite a bit of time due to injury, Tyson had reestablished himself as the fastest man in the world with a 9.86 100m time earlier this year. He won both the 100m and 200m events at the national competitions last month.

Injuries to his groin and hamstring have nagged him throughout his career, he also had surgery to repair his injured hip.

No word yet on what substance caused Tyson Gay to fail his drug test, although odds are that will be revealed in the next few days. We’ll keep you updated.
