Después de la experiencia de Base Torres decidimos alquilar un coche en Reca-Sur, donde ya nos conocen de la vez que fuimos a Argentina y, no solamente nos tratan muy bien, sino que nos dejaron un 4x4 nuevecito a mitad de precio (más barato que un sedán pequeño) con el que nos pasamos el día entero yendo y viniendo por los caminos del Parque Nacional de las Torres del Paine.
Fuimos hasta la entrada oeste, la que se conoce como Administración, por el camino largo, de caminos de ripio muy divertidos de conducir, y más si cabe con un coche todoterreno.
Tuvimos una suerte impresionante con la meteorología ya que el día fue soleado y cuando aparecieron las nubes fueron muy bonitas. La verdad es que nunca hemos visto nubes tan bonitas como las de la Patagonia, ni siquiera en Nueva Zelanda.
El camino que lleva hasta la entrada del parque bordea el Lago Toro; una carretera que nos recordó muchísimo a la Glenorchy Road que tantas veces hicimos.
Una vez entramos en el parque el camino se dirige en linea recta hacia los Cuernos del Paine, bordeando el Lago Pehoé.
Los Cuernos del Paine nos parecieron más impresionantes que las Torres, igual porque las Torres las vemos cada día desde AWASI. La roca gris es granito y la negra es sedimentaria. La formación de los Cuernos, se mire por donde se mire, es impresionante y, con un poco de imaginación, uno puede imaginarse los glaciares erosionando las montañas hasta formar lo que vemos hoy en día.
Hicimos pequeñas caminatas a miradores que había por el camino, nos paramos siempre que quisimos a hacer fotos y mirar el paisaje.
Condujimos un par de veces la única carretera del Parque que une Administración con Laguna Amarga parando a ver el Lago Nordenskjöld, el Lago Pehoé, los Cuernos, las Torres, las colinas con guanacos, el Lago Sarmiento, el Monte Almirante Nieto, la Pampa Patagónica que lleva hasta Argentina…
Ya de vuelta hacia Natales decidimos aprovechar que teníamos el coche para desviarnos hacia el Lago Grey y ver un poco los icebergs que se desprenden del Glaciar Grey, mucho más grande que el Perito Moreno pero también más inaccesible.Volvimos a Puerto Natales por la carretera de la Cueva del Milodón, la misma que hicimos en tandem, donde disfrutamos del atardecer en el Fiordo de Última Esperanza.

After the experience we had going to Base Torres we decided to rent our own transport. We went again to Reca-Sur where they still know us from the time we rented a car to go to Argentina with Nic. They not only are really honest and treat us well but they also always give us really good deals. In this case they gave us a new 4WD for half of the usual price to drive around the park for a day.
That day we started from the West entry, known as Administración. We took the long, rough and scenic way to get there and Enrique had an awesome time driving on those gravel roads.
We got really lucky with the weather, it was sunny but there were clouds every now and then and these clouds were really pretty. To be honest, we’ve never seen clouds as pretty as the ones in Patagonia, not even in New Zealand, the land of the Long White Cloud.
The drive to the entry around the shores of the Lake Toro reminded us a lot of the Glenorchy road that we drove so many times while we lived in New Zealand.
Once in the park, the road goes straight towards the Cuernos del Paine (literally, Paine’s Horns) and goes around the Lake Pehoé.
We were impressed by the Cuernos a lot and we found them more beautiful and interesting than the Torres. However, it might be because we’re very used to the Torres as we see them every day from work and the Cuernos were new for us. The Cuernos are composed of two different materials: the grey strip is granitic while the black part is sedimentary rock. That formation is incredible regardless where you are looking at it and if you’ve got good imagination you can even see the old glaciers eroding the mountains to give them the shape they currently have.
That day we did little hikes to lookouts, stopped on the side of the road whenever we saw an interesting view, took as many pictures as we wanted and didn’t have to wait for anything or anyone.
We drove twice the only road that crosses the park passing by the Lake Nordenskjöld, the Lake Pehoé, the Cuernos, the Torres, hills full of guanacos, the Lake Sarmiento, Almirante Nieto, the Patagonic Pampas that take you to Argentina and so on.
And before going back to Natales we decided to take the turn to go to Lake Grey and have a look at the icebergs that the glacier at the end of the lake release. That glacier is way bigger than Perito Moreno but at the same time is harder to reach since you really have to take a boat to see it. We drove back to town through the road to the Milodon’s Cave, that same one we rode on a tandem, and we enjoyed another beautiful sunset in the Last Hope Fiord. Enrique & Marina
