Flood warning issued for portions of WV, including central and southwestern Kanawha

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — UPDATE, 6 p.m.

Most of central and southern West Virginia is now under a flood warning until late Thursday night.

The warning is in effect until 10:30 p.m. Thursday for central Kanawha County, southeastern Calhoun County, northwestern Nicholas County, southwestern Gilmer County, Braxton County, southeastern Roane County and Clay County.

Meanwhile, a flood warning also is in effect until 11 p.m. for southwestern Kanawha County, Mingo County, Lincoln County, southeastern Wayne, Logan County and Boone County.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Charleston, Sutton, Clay, South Charleston, Chesapeake, Marmet, Belle, Clendenin, Cedar Grove, East Bank, Gassaway, Glasgow, Pinch, Birch River, Glen, Coal Fork, Elkview, Alum Creek, Big Otter, Wallback, Williamson, Madison, Logan, Chapmanville, Man, Delbarton, Van, Ranger, Mount Gay-Shamrock, Harts, Gill, Mallory, Hinch, Julian, Spurlockville, Bald Knob, Chief Logan State Park, Holden, Amherstadale-Robinette and Red Jacket.

A flood warning means that flooding is occurring or should be occurring soon.

Meanwhile, a flood watch remains in effect until midnight Thursday for portions of central West Virginia and southern West Virginia, including Calhoun, Roane, Boone, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan and Mingo.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for parts of central and southern West Virginia until midnight Thursday.

The weather service said 1 to 2 inches of rainfall is possible for Lincoln, Kanawha, Roane, Calhoun, Mingo, Logan and Boone counties.

Rain, locally heavy at times, will persist through the afternoon and evening, the weather service said.

Flooding of creeks, streams, low lying and poor drainage areas is possible.
