CLP Smart Meters on way

Finance | Joyce Chen 5 Mar 2018

CLP Holdings (0002) will introduce Smart Meters to help its individual customers in Hong Kong keep track of their household power consumption, said chief executive Richard Lancaster.

But rolling out the new service will take several years, he added.

Lancaster said some of CLP's corporate clients in Hong Kong have already adopted the technology, which is already widely used in Australia.

CLP is intensifying its technological thrust to see how it can veer away from its traditional manner of doing business, he said. CLP did well last year in Australia as unit EnergyAustralia contributed HK$2.74 billion to group operating profits. Lancaster, however, said there are no current plans to take its Australian unit public. "There is no pressing need for us to take money off the table in Australia," he said.
