Newark man, 26, sentenced for fatal stabbing of Elizabeth man

ELIZABETH — A Newark man has been sentenced to nine years in state prison for fatally stabbing the boyfriend of his daughter's mother in 2012, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace Park announced today.

A Newark man was sentenced to nine years in state prison in the 2012 stabbing death of an Elizabeth resident.

Saint Merilan, 26, was found guilty of reckless manslaughter and weapons offenses last month, in connection with the Aug. 3, 2012 death of Marckenson Flobert, a 25-year-old Elizabeth resident.

Authorities said that Merilan had driven his daughter to her mother's house on the 300 block of Chestnut Street to drop her off, and was waiting in his car when the mother arrived home with her boyfriend, Flobert.

After an exchange of words that turned violent, Merilan got out of the car with a knife and stabbed Flobert repeatedly, killing him, authorities said.

Merilan was arrested that same day and indicted in December 2012.

Merilan will be required to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole, Park said.
