Scare-a-thon: 13 Horror Movie Franchises You Could Binge-Watch In Time For Halloween

Just in case Asian horror films are not enough for you to get spooked and sleepless, we're giving you a list of horror movie franchises to watch in the coming days, especially for when you have a lot of time to kill (pun intended). 

The Halloween movie marathon continues, because really, what more is there to do in October than watch everything horror, right? Besides, there really is nothing like chilling at home at night – after work or during the weekend – watching vengeful spirits, possessed dolls, and mass murderers haunt and kill people. 

Just in case Asian horror films are not enough for you to get spooked and sleepless, we're giving you a rundown of horror movie franchises to watch in the coming days, especially for when you have a lot of time to kill (pun intended). 

1. Alien

Time to Watch the Franchise: 12 hours and 4 minutes

The Alien film franchise follows Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and how she handles and battles the extraterrestrial lifeform known as "The Alien". The original franchise is composed of four films: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection – directed by Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, respectively. Scott also directed the two prequel films: Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, set 30 years before the events of Alien.

Two spinoff films have also been made, putting the world of Aliens and Predator together – Alien vs. Predator, released in 2004 and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem which premiered in 2007. 

2. Halloween

Time to Watch the Franchise: 15 hours and 22 minutes

This horror franchise consists of ten iflms, novels, comic books, merchandise, and even a video game, all of which mainly revolve around the antagonist Michael Myers (except in Halloween III). Also known as "The Shape", Myers is a masked man who escapes a sanitarium and goes on killing the people of Haddonfield, Illinois on Halloween while being chased by his former psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis. The first film, Halloween, is also said to have inspired the slasher films that have been produced after its premier in 1978. 

An 11th film is in the works and is slated for release next year. 

3. Friday the 13th 

Time to Watch the Franchise: 18 hours and 33 minutes

One of the films that followed the success of Halloween is Friday the 13th, with 9 films, novels, comic books, and merchandise. All the films feature Jason Voorhees who drowned in Camp Crystal Lake as a boy and is portrayed to either be the killer or the motivation for the killings in the lake for the years that follow. The first film, Friday the 13th was released in 1980 and was directed by Sean Cunningham. 

4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Time to Watch the Franchise: 10 hours and 45 minutes

The star of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is the famous Leatherface, a man who wears a mask made of human skin and goes on killing people with the use of a chainsaw and a mallet. The film franchise currently has 8 films, the first one being in 1974 and the most recent – Leatherface – which premiered just this year. 

5. A Nightmare on Elm Street

Time to Watch the Franchise: 14 hours and 10 minutes

In A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, a serial killer named Freddy Krueger – with his burny face and razor-armed gloves- who haunts and kills his victims through their dreams. This causes them to die in the real world as well.  The franchise, which began with the film directed by Wes Craven in 1984, consists of 9 slasher films. 

6. The Exorcist

Time to Watch the Franchise: 10 hours and 51 minutes

The five films in The Exorcist film series are all based on the novel of the same name by William Blatty. Throughout these films, different priests encounters someone who is possessed by the demon Pazuzu, and they face the dilemma of exorcizing them. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist was released 32 years after the first film premiered. 

7. Scream

Time to Watch the Franchise: 7 hours and 39 minutes

Aside from A Nightmare on Elm Street, Wes Craven also directed all four films in the Scream franchise in 1996. The films follow Sidney Prescott as she searches for the murderers who uses the guise of masked stalker and murderer named Ghostface. The franchise is also known to be one of the highest-grossing slasher film in the world and has been known for approaching the horror genre with humor and the awareness of horror film cliches. 

8. Child's Play

Time to Watch the Franchise: 10 hours and 24 minutes

The Child's Play film franchise has created 7 slasher films since 1988, all of which are centered on Charles Lee Ray who is also known as Chucky. He is a serial killer whose soul is trapped inside a Good Guy doll after he performs a voodoo ritual "to avoid the afterlife". The most recent addition to the franchise, Cult of Chucky, was released on Blu-Ray, DVD, and VOD just this month. 

9. Final Destination

Time to Watch the Franchise: 7 hours and 35 minutes

Originally meant to be part of the X-Files TV series, the Final Destination franchise is based on an unproduced spec script by Jeffrey Reddick. It currently consists of five films, all revolving around a small group of people trying to escape Death after the protagonist gets a premonition of a mass-casualty accident.  While they may make it out alive after the first premonition, they soon find themselves trying to cheat death again as the survivors get involved in a series of bizarre accidents seemingly caused by an "unseen force." 

What sets the Final Destination films apart from the other horror movie franchise is that there are no ghosts, slashers, or possessed dolls out to antagonize the characters. They're all basically trying to escape, if not defeat, Death itself, making it all the more haunting! 

10. Insidious

Time to Watch the Franchise: 5 hours and 4 minutes

The 3 Insidious films are all presented as cases for demonology (study of demons). The first two flicks, Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, revolve around a couple haunted by demons from a hellish realm after their son goes into a comatose state and becomes a vessel for ghosts.  Insidious: Chapter 3, on the other hand, is a prequel and centers on the  psychic who helps a young girl with the ability to call out the dead. 

A fourth film, entitled Insidious: The Last Key, is set for release next year. 

11. Conjuring

Time to Watch the Franchise: 7 hours and 44 minutes

The Conjuring film series dramatizes the true-to-life cases of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorrain Warren, The two films from the main series, The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, focus on how they try to help people who are haunted and possessed by demons: the Perron Family for the first film and the case of Enfield Potergeist for the second.

Meanwhile, the spinoff films mainly tell the story of  the entities and supernatural beings that the Warrens encountered. Annabelle narrates the history of the doll of the same name, while Annabelle: Creation – a prequel – focuses on how the Warrens came in contact with it. Two other spinoffs, The Nun and The Crooked Man, are in the works. 

12. Paranormal Activity

Time to Watch the Franchise: 7 hours and 15 minutes

For the ones who enjoy found footages, Paranormal Activity is a must-watch. The supernatural film series – with 5 films and a spinoff – all revolving around a family haunted by demons who stalk and even murder its members and the bystanders throughout the films. Production cameras are set up as security cameras, handheld cameras, or other recording devices to make the story feel as though they happened in real life, making everything even more terrifying! 

13. The Amityville Horror 

Time to Watch the Franchise: 5 days and 14 hours

If you have that much time in your hands, The Amityville Horror is a good binge-watch. All 18 of the films are set in a haunted house in Amityville, New York, said to be the site of the mass murder of Ronald DeFeo Jr. back in 1974. The prequel, Amityville II: The Possession, on the other hand, centers on the supernatural elements in the said home which has led DeFeo to commit the crimes he committed.
