Missing Upstate 3-Year-Old Drowned In Lake

CPR was performed on the child and he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

MILFORD, NY — The search for a missing upstate child ended in tragedy Sunday. State police said Andrew Durkin, 3, of Gilboa, Schoharie County, was found by a member of its Underwater Recovery Team submerged in about 7 feet of water approximately 17 feet away from a residential dock on Goodyear Lake along the Susquehanna River.

CPR was performed on the child and he was taken to the A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta, Ostego County, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the manner of death has been ruled as a freshwater drowning and was accidental. No foul play is suspected.

Durkin’s family, consisting of four adults and six children, were at their summer residence in Milford, Ostego County. They reported the child missing around 2:54 p.m. Sunday.

Multiple agencies searched for the boy, including the Ostego County Sheriff’s Department, State Police and Ostego County Sheriff’s Department K9s, Milford Fire Department and Milford EMS. State police said civilians also helped search for the child.
