A man had to be taken to hospital after a house fire near Friar Gate.

Crews from Kingsway, Ascot Drive and Nottingham Road were called out to the scene, in South Street just after 5pm.

Firefighters had to carry out a rescue and one man has now been take to hospital.

The fire is now under control and forensics have now arrived to investigate.

A spokesman from Derbyshire police said: "The fire started at about 5.15pm at a house in South Street, near Friar Gate.

"The fire has been brought under control. Our officers and the fire service will carry out a joint investigation in due course and the cause is not known at this time.

"Please avoid the area if you can as there is increased traffic due to the emergency services attendance in the area."

Residents saw fire and police descend on South Street

A neighbour who did not wish to be named said: “I don’t know the people who live there, but I know they’ve been there quite a while.

“I was in the middle of making my evening meal when I just saw fire engines and police cars outside.

“I don’t know anything else.”

Officers at the scene stated that forensics are on their way to the scene.

Four men 'waiting to be let back in'

Our reporter Anna Whittaker stated that four men are currently waiting in the street to be let back into their home.

They said that the police told them they will find the men a place to stay tonight as they won’t be allowed back in until tomorrow.

Resident heard 'loads of beeping'

Ivan Stott, 50, has lived in the street for four years.

He said: “I just heard loads of beeping and when I went to look there were loads of people on the street.

“Generally it’s a really quiet street and a really nice place to live, but does attract some unsavoury traffic.”

Man claims his friend was taken to hospital

David, who says he lives in the shared house which caught fire, claims his friend has been taken to hospital.

He said: “My friend, who is from Sweden, has gone to hospital. I hope he is OK. I don’t know what happened.

“I want to go in my room, but the police said I’m not allowed in the house.”

Fire has been brought 'under control'

The fire started at about 5.15pm at a house in South Street, near Friar Gate.

A spokesman from Derbyshire police said: “The fire has been brought under control.

“Please avoid the area if you can as there is increased traffic due to the emergency services attendance in the area.”

Man taken to hospital

Firefighters from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service stated that a man had to be rescued.

He has now been taken to hospital by East Midlands Ambulance Service.

They also tweeted about the incident.
