Volunteers sew to benefit Food Bank

PHOTO: Members of GFWC Contemporary Women of North County held their quarterly Sew-In at the San Marcos Community Center and made 48 aprons and 140 placemats for the North County Food Bank. The placemats will be given to families with their Thanksgiving deliveries. The food bank is going to provide the aprons for their volunteers to wear when they’re working at the distribution center. ‘Mobile Museum’ for kids coming to mall

The San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum “Mobile Museum” is coming to The Shoppes at Carlsbad from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday with a free interactive “learn and play” exhibit for children ages 10 and younger, with levels from preschool to fifth grade. Veterans Forum

on treating injuries

A Veterans Forum, themed “Uncommon Heroes, Common Virtues,” is set for 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, hosted by San Diego County Supervisor Bill Horn at the North Inland Live Well Center, 649 W. Butterfly migration topic of lecture

A lecture series presented by the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, and EcoLife Conservation kicks off with a presentation titled “Roar of the Monarch Butterfly” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the center’s concert hall, 340 N. Escondido Blvd. Bill Toone, executive director and founder of EcoLife Conservation, will lead the audience through the monarch butterfly migration. Tickets cost $14. Dueto Dos Rosas to perform at arts center

Dueto Dos Rosas will perform at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Concert Hall of the California Arts Center, Escondido. Dueto Dos Rosas features two sisters, Emily and Sheyla Rosas, from Oaxaca, Mexico, and now based in San Marcos, sharing “songs from the soul,” accompanied by a full band. Gemologist to speak about Vietnam rubies

The Fallbrook Gem and Mineral Society holds a free meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the FGMS building, 123 W. Alvarado St. The guest speaker will be local gemologist Manuel Diaz, who will share his latest trekking adventure to find Vietnam’s rubies and spinels. Diaz, who served in the Marine Corps for 31 years, went on to become a Graduate Gemologist at the Gemological Institute of America. There will be light refreshments and a raffle. ‘The Emperor and the Spy’ author to speak

Author Stan Katz will discuss his book “The Emperor and the Spy” at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Fallbrook Library, 124 S. Mission Road. The book is about two unsung heroes who risked everything trying to prevent Japan from joining the Axis Powers and entering World War II. The city of Oceanside seeks nominees for the 2019 Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award. The annual award honors residents of Oceanside who have made a significant contribution to improve community life. Residents of the Oceanside or Camp Pendleton may be nominated by Dec. 6. Free tutoring for students at library

The Oceanside Public Library offers tutoring to high school students from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays led by volunteers at its Civic Center location, 330 N. Coast Highway, in the Teen Zone, while Oceanside Unified School District is in session. The library also offers Brainfuse HelpNow — on demand, e-learning for all ages and levels. Students communicate with online tutors using an interactive, virtual whiteboard. College hosts blood drive Thursday

MiraCosta College will host a mobile blood drive with the San Diego Blood Bank from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the bloodmobile near the center of campus, 1 Barnard Drive. Church music ministry to hold concert Nov. 11

The Village Community Presbyterian Church Music Ministry, led by Director of Music Ministries Juan Carlos Acosta, holds the first concert of the 2018-2019 season, “If It Ain’t Baroque...” at 4 p.m. Nov. 11 at 6225 Paseo Delicias. Veterans Day Luncheon Friday at senior center

A Veterans Day Luncheon is set for Friday at the Gloria McClellan Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. A World War II slide presentation will be at 10 a.m. followed by a Music Men Chorus concert at 11 a.m. and lunch featuring barbecued pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw, and peach crisp or lentil soup and chicken salad on spinach.
