THE weather was glorious today as crowds enjoyed an annual sheepdog and hound show.

The 114th Vale of Rydal Sheepdog Trials and Hound Show took place at the spectacular setting of Rydal Park near Ambleside.

Sheepdogs, hounds, beagles and terriers were just a few of the dogs being judged as families wandered around taking in all that was to offer.

Holcombe Harriers was there with 16 hounds. Andy Boyes, part of the team from Lancashire, said: "We have won an array of rosettes today, Steven has an armful.

"We come every year to this show, and we like it.

"Just look at the setting, especially on a day like today, there's not many nicer places to be."

Most of the day was taken up with the traditional dog shows, kicking off at 8.30am with Stanley Le Fleming's Rydal sheepdog trials.

The three categories included the Rydal Novice Class, the Le Fleming Stakes and the Double Dog Class.

Catering for everyone's needs, the show had more than 20 trade stands for some country life shopping from clothing and accessories to art and displays.

Besides the obvious, there were plenty of other activities and things to see to suit all needs.

Michael Nicholson didn't have to travel far to get to the show, bringing a trailer of hounds with him.

He said: "This is our local show, our kennels are just behind the trees.

"Every show is different, with different judges.

"The day is great now the sun is shining, it is very much a social day. It is good."

Food and drink were an endless option with a number of people choosing an ice cream or a cold beer.

The ever popular terrier race saw crowds gather up on the hills and around the ring to watch. It is fair to say this was one of the most watched events of the day.
