Crash That Closed I-5 Monday Involved Jersey Barrier - Again

The highway was closed and then reduced as WSDOT crews cleaned up a crash involving a jersey barrier.

TACOMA, WA - The nasty crash along I-5 early Monday morning happened after a car crashed into a jersey barrier, pushing concrete pieces to the other side of the highway. It's the second time this type of accident has happened in this area over the last 30 days.

Six people were involved in Monday's crash, which happened around 2:30 a.m. Gregory Thoreson, 67, of Bothell, was driving southbound near SR 16. He crashed his van into the jersey barrier, pushing it into the northbound lanes, according to Washington State Patrol.

A semitrailer driving northbound hit the concrete barrier, causing a chain reaction of crashes.

A similar accident happened in the same area on Sept. 12. A semitrailer crashed into the barrier between the north and southbound lanes near Yakima Avenue in Tacoma. The semi pushed the concrete onto the other side of the highway, causing it to shut down.

One person was injured in Monday's crash. Shawn Shipp, 42, of Copalis Crossing, was transported to Tacoma General for treatment of his injuries.
