SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – State investigators appear to be zeroing-in on financial issues in the Scranton School District.
Agents with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office searched an auto garage today in Scranton which is operated by the district’s former fleet manager.
Last year, Pennsylvania’s Auditor General blasted the Scranton School District for giving health benefits to Dan Sansky and his wife who were not district employees.
Sansky runs the garage on East Elm Street that was searched Tuesday.
The current Scranton School asked for an investigation and it looks like they’ve gotten their wish as evidenced by what took place here Tuesday at Danny’s Garage.
State troopers and agents with the Pennsylvania Attorney Generals Office removed several boxes of potential evidence from Danny’s Garage shortly before 2:00 PM Tuesday afternoon.
The raid, which lasted for several hours, is significant because of its location.
The garage is operated by Dan Sansky, a former mechanic for the Scranton School District, who has made a lot of headlines over the last year.
“I’m surprised. I know Danny. He’s a very nice guy,” customer Len Lowry said. “He’s a very good mechanic.”
Last October, Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale raised concerns, saying Sansky and his wife received health benefits from the school district for 12 years while not being actual district employees.
An audit also found Sansky was paid more than $672,000 for work covered by vague receipts.
“As a taxpayer, there’s only so much you can do. When you see this, if that’s true, somebody has to go to jail for it,” Gene Barrett of Scranton said.
The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office would not comment on Tuesday’s raid or say exactly what they were looking for.
“They will get to the bottom of it. That’s why I’m glad to see them here!” Barrett said.
After the raid was complete, reporters knocked on the door of Danny’s Garage.
There was at least one person inside the shop but no one answered the door.
Sansky’s customers say they’re not judging him yet.
“You’re innocent until you’re proven guilty too, so,” Lowry said.
All Tuesday afternoon, there was someone inside Danny’s Garage. The person slipped out through a back door during strong storms in Scranton around 3:30 PM. He got into a vehicle and did not comment.
