Main Street intersection in downtown Sun Prairie now open to traffic

The project to restore the intersection on Main Street in downtown Sun Prairie is now open to traffic.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the road is substantially complete. The project included new concrete pavement, signals, signing, curb, gutter and sidewalk.

In August, Governor Scott Walker approved a $1,024,860 emergency contract to reconstruct the WIS 19/Main Street intersection damaged by the natural gas explosion on July 10.

The design, construction and reopening of the road was completed in less than four months, two weeks ahead of schedule.

On Wednesday, the City of Sun Prairie held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the re-opening of Main Street.

Officials who spoke thanked first responders and remembered Captain Cory Barr's Legacy, the volunteer firefighter who died in the Sun Prairie explosion.

There will be several memorials honoring fallen fire Captain Cory Barr including one at the fire station. There will also be one where the Barr House used to stand, which is the business Barr owned with his wife, and where he died.
