KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The first set of penguins has arrived at the Kansas City Zoo. The three Humboldt Penguins are undeniably cute, cool and not camera shy. The male trio is originally from South America. On Thursday they arrived from the Segdwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kan.

“People just adore them. I think because they’re so active and fun to watch,” Kansas City Zoo Director Randy Wisthoff said.

Right now, their new $10 million habitat at the Kansas City Zoo is under construction. These feathered fellows will soon be flapping around in a 25,000 gallon pool.

The penguins will share their new pad with several species of penguins from zoos in St. Louis, Orlando, Houston and Philadelphia.

“It’s very unique and it’s got a big window partition in it, and on really cold days we can close the window. On really nice days we can open the windows and let fresh air in,” Wisthoff said.

When the penguins’ new exhibit is completed, about 50 of these mild-mannered birds will call the Kansas City Zoo home. The public will get its first chance to check them out in late October.
