Lawyer Who Went on Viral Xenophobic Rant Banned From His NYC Office

Source: Mediate

by Jon Street | 2:11 pm, May 17th, 2018

The New York City man whose xenophobic rant was captured on video at a Midtown restaurant Tuesday is no longer welcome at his office.

The incident captured the man, a New York City lawyer identified as Aaron Schlossberg, at Fresh Kitchen in Midtown Manhattan berating workers because they spoke Spanish. Schlossberg said that his “guess” was that they were “undocumented,” and added that his “next step” was to call ICE.

Following the Tuesday tantrum, a GoFundMe page was set up to troll Schlossberg outside his office with a Mariachi band and taco truck. Then, on Thursday, WABC-TV’s Derick Waller reported that the band and taco truck were the least of Schlossberg’s worries. Schlossberg, according to Waller’s report, is no longer welcome inside the building where he rents office space.

Even so, that apparently didn’t stop Schlossberg from going to work on Thursday. The New York Post captured the 42-year-old lawyer leaving his Manhattan apartment — but not without being surrounded by reporters. At one point, Schlossberg stopped and said into his cellphone, “Please send help. They’re claiming things that aren’t true. Schlossberg added that reporters were “grabbing me” and “not letting me walk.” One reporter strongly pushed back against those claims, though, saying Schlossberg was never pushed or grabbed and was allowed to walk “wherever” he wanted.

The little guy next to him has been photographed at all sorts of Trump events w lots of swag- tees and buttons. He’s not an alpha though, so I’m sure his compensation was less. This guy is either dangerously unstable or an attention-seeking nutter — maybe both — it’s rather scary to think that he has a law license. There are apparently more examples of his nutcase offensive behavior — this is just one example that predates this incident:

Admission to practice law in New York is handled by the Appellate Divisions, an intermediate appellate court in New York that has four geographical departments. You make your application to the appropriate Department. If, after you're admitted, you do something that calls into question your fitness to continue to practice law, the case can be investigated by the disciplinary committee for that Department, which can recommend various penalties, up to and including disbarment. The court then acts on the recommendation of the disciplinary committee.

There are various organizations for lawyers. The New York State Bar Association is one, but there's also the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, New York chapters of national organizations such as the National Lawyers Guild and the American Immigration Lawyers Association, and probably plenty of others that don't occur to me offhand. None of these organizations, however, play any role in admitting people to practice law or in disbarring errant lawyers. You can be in good standing to practice without belonging to any such organization.

As for Schlossberg being toast: I am, I'm proud to say, quite unfamiliar with the details of attorney discipline. No one has ever filed a complaint about me. My guess, however, is that "going on a racist rant that got videotaped" isn't anywhere close to what would support disbarment.

You say it's a violation of fundamental decency? There are places in the United States where being a Muslim or advocating socialism would be widely viewed as a violation of fundamental decency. I don't want to see attorneys disbarred for unpopular opinions.

disbarred...considering the time, effort, and considerable amount of money it takes to actually get to the bar exam..if I were his mother or father I would wash his mouth out with soap...

Me thinks he has shot himself in the foot , metaphorically speaking, of course...what FIRM would hire him now..let alone a client walking into his store - Trump, maybe or his ilk...

oh, that's right, the building where he rents an office - they want nothing to do with him...just one question to this miscreant, "have you no decency"

I often ask, is it nature, or nurture....

The young fellow in the video demonstrated more civility than this jerk..

Be well, Jim Lane, congrats on passing the bar..and not evah having a complaint registered against you..

According to this article, more than 10,000 people have signed a petition to that effect. When you said "toast" I jumped to the conclusion that that's what you meant -- my apologies.

You write:

Saying "not evah" might be too optimistic. I'll go with "not yet" instead. But thanks for the good wishes!
