Woman Jumps to Her Death from Chicago Skyway

Skyway bridge shut down Monday afternoon as police investigate and Coast Guard retrieves her from the frozen river.

An Indiana woman leapt from the Chicago Skyway 200 feet over the Calumet River Monday afternoon in an apparent attempt to kill herself. The skyway was shut down as the Coast Guard retrieved her from the frozen river. Police were called to the bridge at 12:55 p.m. after an abandoned car was found.

The Coast Guard’s ice-rescue team was dispatched from the Calumet Harbor and Chicago Fire Department paramedics were waiting on the riverbank. The woman was plucked from the river and brought to the paramedics, who sped her to Advocate Trinity Hospital.

Karen Lubas of Whiting, Indiana, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
