The suspect charged in a deadly shooting last year at a Marin detox center has been ordered to stand trial on all counts.
Davance Lamar Reed, 38, is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 3 to set further proceedings. His preliminary hearing ended Friday after Judge Paul Haakenson ruled there is sufficient evidence to justify a trial.
Reed is charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, domestic violence, vehicle theft, recklessly evading police and possession of a semi-automatic firearm by a felon. He could face life in prison.
The shooting happened on Nov. 5 at the Helen Vine Recovery Center in San Rafael. Reed’s girlfriend, a drug counselor, had apparently brought him there for treatment, authorities said.
Reed allegedly opened fire, hitting his girlfriend and two detox employees. One of the employees, Nathan Lamont Hill, 52, of Vallejo, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Later that day, Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies arrested Reed after a chase on Highway 101.
The preliminary hearing included “extensive evidence showing that Mr. Reed was in an unstable and irrational state of mind before, during and after the events at Helen Vine,” said Reed’s court-appointed defense attorney, David Brown.
“We plan to present this evidence to the jury,” Brown said.
Authorities described Reed as a transient with ties to Marin City and Vallejo. His prior record includes drug and firearms offenses in San Francisco, Monterey County, Lassen County and Nevada, the prosecution said.
