The fourth annual Burgerama music festival arrives at the Observatory in Santa Ana on Saturday and Sunday with a mix of established acts such as Weezer and Gang of Four, up-and-comers such as Ty Segall and Ariel Pink, and a host of lesser-known garage rock, power pop and indie artists for which the Orange County-based Burger Records is best known.
Burgerama 4 will take over three stages at the Observatory – the Rama main stage set up in the parking lot of the venue off Harbor Boulevard just north of the 405 freeway, the Observatory itself and the smaller Constellation Room inside the same building. Music starts at noon both days and runs past midnight.
Highlights on Saturday include:
On the Rama stage: Headliners Weezer, whose guitarist Brian Bell will also appear in his side group the Relationship, the raucous skate punk of FIDLAR, the angular post-punk of England’s Gang of Four, and the noisy garage rock of the superbly named Bass Drum of Death.
Inside on the Observatory and Constellation stages: Psychedelic rock legend Roky Erickson, jazzy hip-hop innovator Madlib, Orange County dream popsters Tomorrows Tulips, surf rockers Swimmers, a group founded by Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong’s son Joey, and melodic Brit rockers Palma Violets.
Highlights on Sunday include:
On the Rama stage: Headliner and Laguna Beach native Ty Segall, Atlanta-based garage rockers Black Lips, old-school hip-hop act Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, dreamy psychedelia from Ariel Pink, the party rock of the King Kahn & BBQ Show.
Inside on the Observatory and Constellation stages: Orange County native singer-songwriter Nick Waterhouse, guitar legend and Dinosaur Jr. front man J. Mascis, Long Beach’s Dengue Fever and their oddly beautiful mix of Cambodian pop and rock ’n’ roll, and the jangly rock of Australia’s Twerps.
