The state Department of Environmental Conservation today released an update on moose/ motor vehicle collisions in Upstate New York for 2018 -- specifically accidents in which the moose died as a result.

The update followed a news release earlier this week cautioning drivers to be careful and on the lookout for moose this time of year in the Adirondacks due to the fact it is the breeding season and they're often on the move.

"DEC has documented a total of six moose-vehicle collisions in 2018 -- four of which occurred in a three-day period this past weekend through Monday (Sept. 29 to Oct. 1).

As for the most recent accidents, DEC noted that "two occurred in the Warrensburg area, one near Dannemora, and one near Meacham Lake. No people were injured in these crashes. In all cases, the moose were either killed by the crash or had to be euthanized due the extent of its injuries."

The DEC has been keeping an annual tally of fatal moose/motor vehicle collisions (fatal for the moose) since 1990. To date, there have been no human fatalities.

The record highs for such accidents were recorded in 2004 and 2006, with 16 in each of those years. Last year there were nine.

The worst overall year for moose fatalities was in 2016 when there were 22 reported moose deaths. That number was the result of 11 motor vehicle accidents and 11 incidents involving unknown causes.

See the DEC website for a summary of all the reported moose fatalities in Upstate New York since 1990.
