Throwback Thursday: Nutt vs. Tuberville

Time to back to 1998.

Clint Stoerner #14...

We climb into our Throwback Thursday time capsule this week and head back to 1998, Houston Nutt’s first season.

November 7, 1998

Arkansas was 7-0 and had climbed to No. 11 in the polls following a victory on the road over Auburn on Halloween.

Ole Miss was led by Tommy Tuberville, who had been the other finalist in the coaching search that had taken place the previous winter, and would eventually leave for Auburn following season.

Nutt won out in that search, and probably had a chip on his shoulder against the Rebels. It was a rain-soaked afternoon in Fayetteville, and Jefferson Pilot cameras caught Tuberville saying, “nothing smells worse than a wet Hog” in the locker room prior to the contest.

The Razorbacks dominated the game, shutting the Rebels out, 34-0. The Clint Stoerner to Anthony Lucas connection was firing on all cylinders in the first half and the defense picked off Ole Miss quarterback Romaro Miller twice.

With the win, Arkansas jumped to No. 10 in the poll and headed to Knoxville the following week with a chance to knock off the No. 1 team in the country and vault into the national title conversation.
