You Complete Me: Saints Get Starter Trevor Foss to Round out Rotation

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints have been carving out a starting rotation in various ways over the last couple of weeks. They finally have five definitive starters after signing free agent right-hander Trevor Foss, who was playing with Somerset in the Atlantic League this season. He will start tonight for the Saints against the Cleburne Railroaders.

The 28-year-old Foss was 2-5 with a 5.44 ERA in 10 starts with the Patriots this season. In 48.0 innings pitched he walked 19, struck out 37 and opponents hit .294 against him. His best outing came on June 15 when he tossed 7.0 shutout innings against New Britain.

Foss was selected in the 22nd round of the First Year Player Draft in 2013 by the Angels out of Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. He spent the entire season with the Rookie Level Orem Owlz and was 3-0 with a 4.31 ERA in 14 games (six starts). In 31.1 innings pitched he walked 12 and struck out 28 while opponents hit .352 against him. He was solid as a reliever going 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA.

In 2014 Foss began the season at Single-A Burlington and was tremendous going 3-6 with a 2.77 ERA in 24 games (one start). In 48.2 innings pitched he walked 20 and struck out 46 while opponents hit just .219 against him. He didn't allow a run in six consecutive relief appearances, 11.1 innings, from April 16-May 6. He also struck out a hitter in the final 14 appearances with the team (30 K's/30.1 IP) from May 10-July 6. Foss was promoted to High-A Inland Empire on July 9 and finished the season with the 66ers going 3-0 with a 4.54 ERA in 11 games (seven starts). In 41.2 innings pitched he walked 11 and struck out 25 while opponents hit .300 against him. In his very first start he tossed 5.0 shutout innings allowing two hits on July 20 vs. Stockton.

Foss spent all of 2015 with Inland Empire, other than one rehab appearance in the Arizona League, and went 4-2 with a 3.36 ERA in 30 games (two starts). In 70.2 innings pitched he walked 18, struck out 63 and opponents hit .268 against him. He once again had an impressive streak of striking out hitters going the final 15 appearances with striking out at least one batter (35 K's/41.0 IP) from June 18-September 3. That included an impressive six strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief on August 5 vs. Lake Elsinore. Foss also went 10.0 scoreless innings from July 30-August 13. He closed out the season strong by pitching back-to-back 4.0 inning shutout relief appearances. He finished the season with the fifth lowest walks/9 IP (2.10).

After the Angels released him following Spring Training in 2016 Foss signed with the Washington Wild Things in the Frontier League. He dominated going 8-3 with a 2.50 ERA with eight complete games and three shutouts in 15 games (14 starts). In 100.2 innings pitched he walked 14 and struck out 66 while opponents hit .237 against him. He threw an amazing five consecutive complete games from May 25-June 17. He had nine quality starts and in both his 9.0 inning complete game shutouts he allowed just three hits. Foss finished first in the league in ERA, complete games, shutouts and tied for fourth in win percentage (.727). The Cleveland Indians purchased his contract on August 1 and he was assigned to Single-A Lake County where he went 3-3 with a 4.86 ERA and one complete game in seven starts. He had a quality start in four appearances including 6.0 shutout innings on August 9 vs. Dayton.

In 2017 Foss went back to the Wild Things and went 12-5 with a 3.06 ERA with four complete games and one shutout in 20 starts. In 132.1 innings pitched he walked 32 and struck out 88 while opponents hit .232 against him. He finished the season first in the league in wins, tied for first in complete games and games started, second in innings pitched, fifth in win percentage (.706), and seventh in ERA. He threw back-to-back complete games on June 30 and July 5. His complete game shutout was a 7.0 inning one-hitter on May 24 vs. Southern Illinois. His team made the playoffs and he pitched Game 1 of the first round where he went 9.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking three and striking out 14. His team, however, would lose Game 1 in extras and lost the series to Florence three-games-to-one.

In order to make room for Foss the Saints placed pitcher Matt Solter on the disabled list retroactive to July 9. Infielder Luke Pettersen also announced his retirement.

The Saints roster stands at 22, one shy of the league maximum, with 11 pitchers and 11 position players.
