Hilhof Farm recalls dairy products after testing error

Hilhof Farm Dairy of Hersey, Michigan, is voluntarily recalling a limited amount of its organic line of milk because required product testing was not conducted by a state-approved analyst, officials said.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development announced the recall Tuesday, which includes Hilhof Farm Dairy's whole, skim, 2 percent, heavy cream and chocolate milk. 

No illnesses associated with the recalled products have been reported, officials said.

U.S Food and Drug Administration regulations require all persons performing laboratory testing of milk to be sold in commerce to be trained and certified by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The recalled dairy products are packaged in glass bottles and include Hilhof brand skim, 2 percent, heavy cream and chocolate milk lots with “best by” dates of Oct. 12 thru Oct. 26; and whole milk with a “use by” date of Oct. 12. The products can be identified by the Hilhof label and glass bottle packaging, and were distributed to 37 locations in lower Michigan.

Hilhof Farm Dairy is notifying its distributors and customers by phone, in person and on social media. They are arranging for return/pick-up of all recalled products. Retailers and distributors that have milk products included in the recall should pull the products from their shelves for return to Hilhof Farm Dairy.
