Available: $5.94 at Amazon.com and on iTunes.

Red Sea Radio ("Old Toys"): Billed as "Music that makes for happy headphones," Red Sea Radio is an electro-rock group whose feel leans melancholy.

Catch the band live 9 p.m. Dec. 21 at Stage on Herr, 268 Herr Street, Harrisburg.

FOLK

Brethren ("November"): The three-song extended play is catchy and makes a great soundtrack to driving down country roads. Known for its three part harmonies, this band is focused on producing simple and honest music. "Death Becomes Us" is the song to listen out for.

Available: $5 at one of the band's shows. A digital version is available on www.brethren1.bandcamp.com for free.

Catch the band live 7 p.m. Dec. 30 at the Chameleon Club, 223 N. Water St., Lancaster.

Lost Companion ("Lost Companion"): With a solid Mumford and Sons-esque sound, Lost Companion is Americana at its most raw. Joe Gualtier is the man behind the one-man band, and he uses his songs to weld stories out of a few strums of his guitar. His peers are taking notice too. His song "Oh Death" won an honorable mention at the 2012 East Coast Songwriting Convention.

Available: $3 at www.lostcompanionmusic.com.

Catch the musician live 8-10 p.m. Dec. 8 at Warm Hearts Cafe, 25 E. Main St., Mechanicsburg.

The Vulcans ("Shadows"): This Mechanicsburg-based Americana trio won first place in the 2011 Susquehanna Folk Society Song Writing Contest for their song "Someone I Used to Know," not to be confused with the Gotye hit. Inspired by The Avett Brothers, the group's lyrics make hearts ache and soar.

POP

Dana Alexandra ("Wash Your Mouth Out"): With a hint of Regina Spektor, Kate Nash and Lily Allen in her music, Dana Alexandra's music is upbeat, quirky and incredibly catchy. "The Underdog" is one of her biggest hits.

Available: $10 on danaalexandra.bandcamp.com, $9.90 on iTunes.

the jellybricks The Jellybricks.

The Jellybricks ("Suckers"): Not many bands can say they have a song that has been named "Coolest Song in the World For This Week" by E-street band member Steven Van Zandt. But The Jellybricks can. Its song "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" impressed the music legend, earning the group a shout out on Van Zandt's radio show "Little Steven's Underground Garage." The rest of the album rocks too, but "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" is definitely worth a listen.

Available: $5.99 on iTunes, $6.93 on Amazon.com.

Kingsfoil ("A Beating Heart is a Bleeding Heart"): This York-based band has taken off in the past year, having appeared on VH1. While initial attention might have been brought by the group's celebrity drummer, Frankie Muniz, it's the strength of the music that keeps people tuned in. Kingsfoil is quickly gathering a vast fan group. After listening to the single "What Your Mother Taught You," it's easy to see why.

Available: $10 at www.kingsfoil.com or $9.99 for a digital copy on iTunes.

Catch the band live 7 p.m. Dec. 29 at the Chameleon Club, 223 N. Water St., Lancaster.
