Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation
$43 million to 27 grantees for coastal-resilience projects that will mitigate damage from natural disasters in Alabama, California, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Among the grantees is the Santa Barbara Foundation, which is receiving a grant of $2.5 million (in addition to $6 million in matching federal grants) to improve steelhead-trout migration and habitat by controlling debris flows from flooding in California watersheds.
National Football League
$35 million to Covid-19 relief efforts. The NFL Foundation has given $3.4 million, and the rest has come from the NFL Players Association, teams, and owners to support 10 organizations: American Red Cross, Bob Woodruff Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, CDC Foundation, GENYOUth Foundation, Meals on Wheels America, Salvation Army, Team Rubicon, United Way, and Wounded Warrior Project.
MetLife Foundation
$25 million pledge to the global Covid-19 response. As part of this commitment, the financial company has given $1 million to food banks in the New York metropolitan area, Cary, N.C., Tampa, Fla., and Warwick, R.I.
James S. McDonnell Foundation
$12.5 million to five universities for programs to improve teachers’ ability to communicate with their students in math, science, social studies, and technology. Temple University, the University of Arizona, the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Washington are each receiving grants of approximately $2.5 million over five years.
Genentech Foundation
$3 million over three years to the American Chemical Society for the ACS Bridge Project, which aims to boost the number of students from underrepresented minority groups who earn doctoral degrees in chemistry and related fields.
Heising-Simons Foundation
$2 million to the University of California at San Francisco Foundation to establish the Covid-19 Response Initiative within the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.
Houston Endowment
$2 million partial challenge grant to the United Way of Greater Houston and the Greater Houston Community Foundation for their Greater Houston Covid-19 Recovery Fund. The Houston Endowment has given $1 million outright and has pledged a 1:4 match of $1 million in donations to the fund.
Saks Fifth Avenue and Hudson’s Bay Foundation
$1.3 million jointly to support Covid-19 relief efforts in the United States and Canada, including Food Banks Canada, the NewYork-Presbyterian Covid-19 Patient Care Fund, and several organizations that are providing emotional and educational support to children and youths.
John Douglas French Alzheimer’s Foundation
$1 million to the University of California at Los Angeles to endow a chair in neurology, specifically for the treatment of older people with Alzheimer’s disease, within the David Geffen School of Medicine.
New Grant Opportunities
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is accepting proposals for grants that address health, equity, and climate change in American cities. A total of $3 million in grants will be given to explore changes in U.S. city planning, policies, and programs that address the unequal health effects of climate change on buildings and energy; land use and urban planning; transportation; waste; food systems and food security; and air quality. Proposals are due April 30.
The NYC Covid-19 Response & Impact Fund, administered by the New York Community Trust, will provide $75 million in grants and interest-free loans to small and midsize nonprofits in the city to help them respond to emerging needs and continue their work. Of particular interest are nonprofit groups in New York that work in arts and culture and human services and will suffer financial losses from the coronavirus pandemic. Applications are due May 30.
