Shepperton Marina has been visited by royalty in the form of the Diamond Jubilee river barge, the Gloriana.

The 94ft long boat was the lead boat during the 2012 Jubilee flotilla along the River Thames in London when it was powered by 18 rowers plus an on board engine.

It was put together by a team which included Chertsey’s Mark Edwards, owner of Richmond Bridge Boathouses, who had also been called upon to build the Jubilant, an eight-oared shallop for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.

The Gloriana carried disabled servicemen and women during the river pageant, rowed by a crew of 18, including Sir Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent.

The barge remains at Shepperton Marina until Thursday after being on display at the Henley Regatta.

Marina supervisor John Harris said: “The Gloriana stays with us for various times throughout the summer so there have been no special arrangements made for its stay, although we do all go down and have a look at her and take photos.

“She is here 10 days in total and we will expect her back a couple of times in August.”
