Hundreds of Girl Scouts from the Sacramento area descended on Raley Field Saturday to pick up some precious cargo. The Girl Scouts Heart of Central California distributed over a million boxes of girl scout cookies – about 80,000 cases – to numerous troops to sell. CEO of The Girl Scouts Heart of Central California Lina Farley said some of the proceeds of cookie sales help pay for fun and educational troop activities like camping, horse riding, and learning science and technology skills. Proceeds also help the scouts fund community projects and donations to those in need. “They do things like help the homeless. They've headed to Shriners Hospital and delivered cookies for kids who are in the hospital and their families," said mother Amy Rovai Gregory. "They have made overnight bags for foster kids." There are 3.2 million active members of The Girl Scouts of the United States of America with more than 59 million alumnae, according to The Girl Scouts Heart of Central California. “What I love about Girl Scouts is it’s really building them to be leaders,” Gregory said. “They are working together, they are having time with just girls with each other. Building friendships, meeting people, learning people skills all the valuable things that we want them to become as women.” The Girl Scouts Heart of Central California said booth cookie sales begin Feb. 23 and local cookie sales end March 18. The "Cookie Finder" app can tell users where to purchase cookies nearby.
