Golden Gloves coming to N.H.

Northern New England Tournament set for Saturday in Somersworth

SOMERSWORTH — For the first time in over 30 years, the Northern New England Golden Gloves Tournament is returning to New Hampshire.

The Golden Gloves, hosted by Jass Boxing of Berwick, Maine, will be held at Tri-City Christian Academy in Somersworth at 12 Rocky Hill Road on consecutive Saturdays starting at 6 p.m.

The preliminary bouts are scheduled for this Saturday with the championship bouts set for Jan. 26. Feb. 2 has been set aside as a snow date.

Among the local boxers competing are Rochester’s Cody Zombeck, a time-time defending champion, and Alyssa Trepanier; Portsmouth’s Gabriel Finn and Robert Goodwin, Dover’s Kyle Wilson and Theo Wright, Nottingham’s Derek Carlsberg, Rollinsford’s Joseph Boucher and Michael Navarro of Kittery, Maine.

Along with the local boxers, there will also be boxers from clubs in Keene; Portland, Lewiston and Waterville, Maine; and Winooski, Burlington and Springfield, Vt.

Winners from this tournament will advance to the 73rd annual Golden Gloves at the Lowell (Mass.) Memorial Auditorium beginning Feb. 14.

Ticket prices for general admission are $15 for the first week and $18 for Week 2 ($30 for both weeks). Reserved seating is $25 and $30 ($50 for both weeks). Tickets are available at the door or by calling Joe at 603-978-9563.
