FAA announces grants for Kansas airports

The United States Department of Transportation Secretary says the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is awarding $677 million in airport infrastructure grants, "the first allotment of the total $3.2 billion in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding for airports across the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Transportation says the 241 grants will fund 346 infrastructure projects that include runways, taxiways, aprons and terminals.

"These projects are important to the safety and efficiency of the nation's system of airports," the US. DOT says.

The U.S. DOT says the FAA’s most recent economic analysis shows U.S. civil aviation accounts for $1.6 trillion in total economic activity and supports nearly 11 million jobs.

“If you want a strong transportation system, you have to invest in airport infrastructure,” said U.S. DOT Secretary Elaine L. Chao. “Airports are the backbone of aviation. These communities are going to reap greater safety, efficiency, and economic dividends for years to come.”

* Gardner Municipal in Gardner, KS, $518,528 to buy land for approach coverage.

* Garnett Municipal in Garnett, KS, $180,000 to update the Airport Master Plan.

* Herington Regional in Herington, KS, $45,000 to install navigational aids, and $174,141 to install taxiway lighting.

* Hill City Municipal in Hill City, KS, $599,346 to rebuild a taxiway.

* Independence Municipal in Independence, KS, $180,000 to rehabilitate a runway, and $72,810 to rehabilitate a taxiway.

* Clyde Cessna Field in Kngman, KS, $225,000 to update the Airport Master Plan.

* Mark Hoard Memorial Airport in Leoti, Kansas, $15,000 to install airport beacons; $20,000 to install navigational aids; $25,000 to install runway vertical/visual guidance system; $18,000 to install taxiway lighting; and $522,000 to rebuild a runway.

* Liberal Mid-America Regional in Liberal, KS, $802,222 to buy snow removal equipment; $456,000 to rebuild a taxiway; $150,000 to rehabilitate an apron; and $150,000 to rehabilitate a building.

* Manhattan Regional in Manhattan, KS, $450,000 to update the Airport Master Plan.

* Newton City-County Airport in Newton, KS, $191,160 to rehabilitate a taxiway.

* Ottawa Municipal in Ottawa, KS, $400,000 to install taxiway lighting.

* Tri-City Airport in Parsons, KS, $45,000 to rebuild an airport beacon, and $597,263 to rehabilitate a runway.

* Phillipsburg Municipal in Phillipsburg, KS, $463,973 to build a taxiway.

* Atkinson Municipal in Pittsburg, KS, $300,600 to rehabilitate a runway.

* Russell Municipal in Russell, KS, $58,500 to install runway vertical/visual guidance system; $238,500 to rebuild runway lighting; $108.00 to rebuild taxiway lighting.

* Salina Regional in Salina, KS, $886,500 to buy an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting vehicle.

* Smith Center Municipal in Smith Center, KS, $396,000 to build a taxiway and $27,000 to install airfield guidance signs.

* Syracuse-Hamilton County Municipal, Syracuse, KS, $252,000 to rehabilitate a runway and $49,500 to rehabilitate a taxiway.

* State of Kansas Airport in Topeka, KS, $453,600 to update the State System Plan Study.

* Ulysses Airport in Ulysses, KS, $486,000 for building construction.

* Colonel James Jabara Airport in Wichita, KS, $471,214 to acquire land for approaches.

* Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower International Airport in Wichita, KS, $1,462,500 to acquire two Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting vehicles; $63,000 for friction measuring equipment; $560,509 to build an apron; $427,500 to build a taxiway; $695,287 to expand an apron; $744,368 to rehabilitate taxiway lighting.
