Sears, once one of America's retail giants, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Monday, announcing plans to close almost 150 stores by the end of the year.
The chain will close 142 stores before January 2019 with liquidation sales beginning immediately. A complete list of closing locations is below and includes the Gadsden location in Alabama. The closure leaves only one Sears store in Alabama, located in Hoover. There are no remaining Sears-owned Kmart stores in Alabama.
The bankruptcy comes after years of financial struggles and multiple rounds of closures. Sears now operates 687 Sears and Kmart stores, down from almost 2,000 stores in 2013. It had previously announced 46 unprofitable stores would be closed by the end of November.
Eddie Lampert is resigning as Sears CEO but will remain as company chairman, Sears Holding said.
"Over the last several years, we have worked hard to transform our business and unlock the value of our assets," Lampert said. "While we have made progress, the plan has yet to deliver the results we have desired, and addressing the company's immediate liquidity needs has impacted our efforts to become a profitable and more competitive retailer."
Sears credit cards and loyalty programs will still be honored.
