Digest: Maloney’s OT goal lifts Mount St. Mary’s over LIU Brooklyn in women’s lacrosse, 15-14

Kelly Maloney (River Hill) scored with 2:06 left in overtime off a feed from Sammie Knapp (Loch Raven) to lift Mount St. Mary’s (4-9, 2-1 Northeast Conference) to a 15-14 comeback win over host LIU Brooklyn (3-10, 0-3). Trailing 14-12 with just under five minutes left in regulation, Knapp scored back-to-back goals to send the game into overtime.

More state women’s lacrosse: Kaitlyn Montalbano had a hat trick to lead No. 18 Towson (10-2, 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association)to a 9-3 victory over host Hofstra (3-9, 1-2).

National women’s lacrosse: Hannah Burnett scored six goals to power No. 14 Massachusetts (12-1, 5-0 Atlantic 10) to a 23-2 victory over visiting St. Bonaventure (3-10, 1-4). … Amanda Johansen, Kylie Drexel and Caroline deLyra each had three goals to help No. 5 Southern California (14-0) to a 14-11 win over No. 16 host Northwestern (6-7). … Elizabeth Cusick had four goals to lead No. 9 Stanford (11-2, 6-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) to an 18-6 win over host Fresno State (4-9, 1-6).

Terps‘ A’Lexus Harrison is planning to transfer

Maryland redshirt sophomore basketball forward A’Lexus Harrison (Digital Harbor) will transfer, the school announced Friday. Harrison, who is on target to get her undergraduate degree in three years this summer, can play immediately as a graduate transfer. “I just want to thank all of my teammates, coaches and the staff who helped me at Maryland,” Harrison, who averaged 1.8 points and 2.6 rebounds over two seasons, said in a statement released by the athletic department. “I’ve grown as a person, as a player and I am so proud to have my degree. I’m excited for this next step in my life.”

In the statement, Maryland women’s coach Brenda Frese said, “We’re really proud of A’Lexus for earning her degree in three years and appreciate all of her hard work and her commitment to our program over the past three seasons. We wish her all the best in her next endeavor.” Harrison, She who was the No. 70-ranked player coming out of high school in Baltimore.

More women’s college basketball: Albany named former Maryland assistant Joanna Bernabei-McNamee head coach. Bernabei-McNamee, who spent the past three seasons as head coach of Pikeville, was the Terps‘ assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2003 to 2007, helping them win the 2006 national title.

Men’s college basketball: Siena coach Jimmy Patsos, a former Maryland assistant and Loyola Maryland head coach, received a two-year contract extension, lengthening the deal through the 2020-21 season. Patsos has guided the Saints to a pair of 20-win campaigns and national postseason tournament appearances over his first three seasons.

Lake Clifton graduate Derrick Green, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound combo guard, committed to Jacksonville State this week. Green was a full academic qualifier coming out of Lake Clifton in 2015, but decided to pass on Division II offers in favor of a postgrad year during which he signed on with Believe Prep in Rock Hill, S.C., and played the spring and summer Amateur Athletic Union sessions with Cecil Kirk.

Swimming: Michael Phelps of North Baltimore Aquatic Club won the 200-meter butterfly at the Arena Pro Swim meet in Mesa, Ariz., where wind gusting to 30 mph whipped up the water and created challenging conditions. Phelps touched first in 1 minute, 58.14 seconds. Clark Pace finished second in 1:58.71.

Horse racing: Sagamore Racing’s Miss Temple City, trained by Fair Hill, Maryland-based Graham Motion, became the first filly to win the $300,000 Maker’s 46 Mile Stakes at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Ky. … Daylight Ahead took the lead turning for home and sprinted clear down the stretch to win Laurel Park’s featured eighth race, a $42,000 optional claiming allowance for 3-year-old fillies going 6 furlongs on the main track. NHL: Philadelphia Flyers center Sean Couturier, a defensive specialist, will miss the rest of the first-round series against the Washington Capitals because of an upper-body injury.

National Women’s Soccer League: Former U.S. national team goalie Briana Scurry will perform the ceremonial kickoff immediately before the Washington Spirit hosts the Boston Breakers at 7 tonight in Boyds in the first of five scheduled games on opening weekend.

Men’s college tennis: Navy sophomore Andrey Majkic received Patriot League honorable mention. … Johns Hopkins junior Mike Buxbaum was selected Centennial Player of the Week.

College baseball: Maryland right-hander Hunter Parsons was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. … McDaniel senior Zach Kronick was named Centennial Pitcher of the Week.

Men’s college track and field: Navy sophomore John Campbell was named Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week.
