A tribute to Ed Hochuli, the NFL's buffest referee

Ed Hochuli, arguably one of the most popular officials in the NFL, is leaving his job as a referee.

We’re saying goodbye to his long-winded explanations for his calls, but the thing everyone will truly miss is his sculpted physique.

For what seems like forever, every time he officiated a game, people would take note of his bulging biceps in his striped shirt and massive forearms as he made calls. It made him a cult figure and a fan favorite.

Those arms became so popular that, per a 2012 Sports Illustrated profile, he was forced to keep them in shape:

He is usually out the door by 5:30, knowing that he’ll have to squeeze in a two-hour workout mid-afternoon. Having become renowned for his biceps, he must maintain them in perpetuity. “It’s kind of a bad situation I’ve created,” he concedes, one which forbids him to go to seed in the public eye, even though, as he says, “There are many days that I can’t stand the thought of going to the gym.” …

Hochuli concedes that he wants to look like an athlete, that players respect officials who look the part.

Now he’ll have to settle for being one of the most in-shape lawyers. People wished Hochuli and his arms the best on Twitter:
